Die 50-

Bei der Rückschau auf die 50-
Meine Eltern waren in Mainz ausgebombt (27. Februar 1945).
Kinderspielplatz? Was war das? Kindergarten?
The 50's and 60s, looking back to another world

In retrospect, the 50's and 60´s, which we also call "post-
My parents were bombed in Mainz (27 February 1945). All their possessions still consisted of a small box. They turned from people, who all their live lived self-
When I was born in 1947, there was not yet the state of Rhineland-
My father worked at farmers and stole hell for leather (oder for all one´s worth) : coal, potatoes and Christmas goose! Simply to survive.
Then he was working in Mainz Gonsenheim on the construction (prefabricated wooden houses) and how many others also he took (stole) material from site and built from it our kitchen (cupboard, table, Sideboard, etc.). This furniture still were for our use until the early 60-
But at the same time there was a tremendous spirit of optimism. Although the situation was anything but promising, grabbed one of, did not complain, and built on. Maybe therefore me pisses off (! Wenn schon) the "lamentation at a high level" of today.
My father had learned before the war decorator, but he did not find a chance to work in this profession. There simply was nothing to decorate, the shop windows were empty. Around 1948 my father began to work as a laborer for 70 pfennig / hour (= 0,35 €) at Margraf & Fischer in Mainz, a graphical company l..It was also the same time that he had to travel daily by train from Wöllstein to Mainz, with changing twice .... I don´t know how long time this jouney took, because there is no longer this line for a long time.
But it did not stick to the laborer. My father was able to start an apprenticeship as a "trimmer and print worker ". ("Trimmer and print worker " is the "last stop" in the cliché production in letterpress (a printing technique), that not anymore exists today. The "trimmer and print worker "produces the proofs for the customer and corrects mistakes/ errors.) My father finished his training with success and worked to his retirement in this occupation.
In 1949 the company Margraf & Fischer started to build for their employees in Hechtsheim a settlement, in addition to a previous army barrack, in which the French Soldiers now were housed. And to come more quickly to Mainz my father was still working after work and free of charge in these houses .... In November 1950, we were able to move from Wöllstein to Mainz / Hechtsheim in the house, while other houses were still under construction.
The word "house" sounds today immensely luxurious. The "luxury" for the family of four consisted of a large kitchen, a toilet (no bath) and two bedrooms, one of which was a "trapped" room. In the attic first, another couple was still living without children in two rooms. The toilet was for two apartments. But there was a garden to feed themselves. This condition lasted for a year or two, then we had "our" house for us alone. It was "our" house, also because the company had also regarding off as the owner of the tenant conversions and exercise as they wanted it. My father has exploited plentiful and much and rebuilt off, so a bath end of the 50's years.
This all in addition to the regular work and that was hard, much harder than it is today, but also different from today. There were made a lot, a lot of overtime and my father so many times stayed in operation when it is no longer worthwhile homecoming to drive ... The work was in the foreground.
"Our" village, 2 km from Hechtsheim and the same distance from the Mainz city was wonderful for us children. Hihi! Der ist super! And there were plenty of children. We washed Der auch! Also, ernsthaft: We grew up in the middle of in nature and were playing in the field. Children's Playground? What was that? Kindergarten? What was that?
And even among the adults there was a now hardly known sense of togetherness.. All were employees of Margraf & Fischer. And it may seem astonishing today, that there were "foreigners" and "women foreigners". Our neighbor, operating carpenter and quasi caretaker, was married to a Dutch woman. So I have learned the first Dutch words "ete kome", which she called her children to eat. In "large" house lived a colleague of my father, who was married to a Norwegian woman. And so I got to know the first "exotic" names: Mareike and Peer!
And there were also still the French in the neighborhood. The "un, deux, un, deux, trois" while marching belonged to the language of us children. And our first money we've earned, to bring the French soldiers beer from the nearest pub. Incidentally it is interesting to note, that this tavern already in the 50´s had two funds, one for DM and one for francs.
In the settlement there was one telephone and one car. Our neighbor had a Lloyd 500! 1953 returned also to us the "luxury": my father bought a motorcycle and a sidecar. With the motorcycle he was driving from spring to autumn to work and on Sunday (on Saturday everybody was still working!) so we made our trips in the Taunus.
Where today is the exit "Hechtsheim" the A60, the Americans put a huge military training area with its own shooting range, many shelters (our "caves") and its own dump (a gold mine) . This was also our playground, between real tanks and real flame throwing.
That was really exciting for us and our parents did about that not loose any sleep. We did survive.!
1953 I came to the elementary school, now called the primary school. My first class had 65 students and a young teacher as a classroom teacher. Today This fact no one understands anymore, at times where teachers are overwhelmed with 15 students! And the way to school, which was about two kilometers, led by the field. A school bus? What is that? But even that was exciting, because many a time that debt das sind die Schulden! Also es muss heißen the way to scool took several hours ... -
Like most of my classmates, I changed after the 5th grade in the "middle school" to Mainz, it was called "E-
It was a wounderfull time for me to go to scool, although many removals by school and by layer lessons (one week in the morning, one week in the afternoon) marked that time.
For environment is yet to say, that Mainz was dominated until late in the 60-
Thereafter, particularly after 1968, the world changed fundamentally.
